Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
