Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.

Officers then discovered multiple other marked automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement state preliminary tests suggest the substance was most likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they commented.

Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have asked to the community for tips.

A senior representative stated the incident left him stunned and needed to be addressed promptly.

"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the death of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
