Can You Crack It? That Overlooked Netherlands Invention That Shaped the Modern Globe
One can find numerous candidates to claim the title of “world’s greatest invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
According to a new book, however, that title should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, constructing a modest merchant vessel required approximately 10 lumberjacks laboring for 90 days,” writes the author. “Using wind-driven sawmills, an identical amount of processed timber might be produced within a week.”
Thanks to their rapid mechanical saw, that converted logs into planks with almost no human effort, Dutch builders could build vessels more quickly compared to any other nation, an advantage that sparked a century of Dutch maritime, economic as well as artistic dominance in Europe and the globe.

The inventor's sawmill, contends Dávila, represented “mankind’s initial authentic industrial machine.” A windmill rotated a gear. One component transformed the circular movement into vertical action for the saw. Another component changed that same spinning motion into a lateral motion advancing the log toward the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the log forward one precise increment per cycle.
“Each element was modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s genius was to combine these parts so they operated in a perfectly controlled order, cutting with each descending motion while advancing on every return motion. It was a remarkably intelligent use of fundamental components.”
